Project brief :
One of the challenges we are grappling with in HR is the task of bringing students to work part time in our call centres. Our centres have peaks and troughs in call volumes during each working day and hiring agents working in typical 8 hour shifts is inefficient, since an employee is at peak productivity for only 2 or 3 hours on average, during a consistent and predictable stretch in the course of the average day.
We started working on this idea last year. We figured that the trick was to have an alignment with college managements, so that classroom sessions are moved in order not to clash with company requirements. Towards this end, it was important to have a critical number of students from a given class participating in our programme. That way, such adjustments become possible and the student is not faced with the choice of education or part-time employment. Also, given batches from arts, science & commerce streams and given students in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd years from typical bachelor level programmes, adjustments of a higher order (examination schedules at the college level & consequent absenteeism, etc.) can be practically managed.
Economics aside, this is a good CSR initiative as well. Disadvantaged students from small towns can afford a college education, obtain some work experience and gain in self confidence. SerWizSol can drive down operating cost and attrition levels.
The project met with limited success at SerWizSol last year. This year we would like to see this take off following a pilot involving 50 or 60 people.
The challenge here is to build a deep relationship with one or two deserving colleges at each major location. Annual student intake must to some extent be guided by the company’s recruitment criteria. The company’s training approach has to be changed too : use of appropriate technology, shared infrastructure and so forth. |
